  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an outstanding example of an original Dutch 'Klewang' (Sword) M-1898/1911. This is one of the nicer examples we have encountered in recent years and comes complete with a rare (and correct!) leather scabbard.
    Originally made for use by the Dutch KNIL Forces (The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army or Koninklijk Nederlands Indisch Leger). These cutlasses have an interesting history, having been used by not only the Dutch KNIL, but also the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy (who captured them from the Dutch), followed by the Americans (who subsequently captured them from the Japanese) during WWII.
    This fine example retains very little of its original blued finish. The blade is nicely marked with the arsenal name HEMBRUG on one side, with an inspector stamp on the reverse. The blade is in good condition, with a nice edge and patina, without much serious oxidation. The wooden grip is stamped with RV / 5914.
    This outstanding KNIL Klewang is complete with its original light brown colored scabbard. This is the early scabbard with reinforced leather around its throat-piece and the later was also provided with a narrow strap to affix the scabbard to the frog (these are normally missing like this one). The leather scabbard is marked at the throat with a number W9949A on the reverse of the scabbard body. The Scabbard still even has the brass wrapped reinforcement at the tip, as typical on Dutch edged weapons. The scabbard comes in a gorgeous frog which has a really great swivel to it, with a canvas strap with clip attached at the end, likely added later.
    If you wish to locate a great example, this is it! This would be incredibly hard to upgrade from!
