Original Rare British WWI Machete Dated 1917 with Original 1918 Dated Scabbard

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Available. A fine example of a WWI British Issue Machete with Matching scabbard! An incredibly rare find! These are generally found with WWII Era dates. This, without a doubt, is the very first example we have encountered with a WWI date.

The machete is in very good condition, especially considering its age. The blade has the original blackened finish in places, with an edge that appears to have much post-factory sharpening. The blade is nicely marked with the maker logo for the firm of Samuel Kitchin, which is a coiled snake. The marking reads “Samuel/XCD/Kitchin”. Below the logo is marked “Sheffield”, with the date below “1917”. At the ricasso is stamped a British Broadarrow acceptance stamp. The Grip panels, which are made of an early plastic, are marked “R.D. Melhuish, Ld/London

The scabbard is of leather with an artificial grain pattern, with a piece of buff leather secured to the throat by the means of three tinned copper rivets. The original clouse tab is intact, and not broken. The scabbard is marked “Melhuish Ltd/London”, and “Whippy/London/1918” . The reverse of the belt loop is broadarrow inspector proofed, with the inspector number “124”. The Lanyard cord is undoubtedly period, and appears to have been secured to the pommel of the machete for a very long time.

A fantastic addition to a WWI british, or edged weapon collection! Ready for display!
