Original Item: One of a Kind. Pre-WWII Scrapbook attributed to Fireman 2nd Class Ernest Edward Schindler, who served aboard the U.S.S. Arizona in the 1930s. The leather covered album features a painted cover with a nautical theme. The first few pages inside the album are a Sailor’s Log, the first page of which is the “Domain of Neptunus Rex” Certificate, an unofficial award presented to sailors for crossing the equator. This particular award was given while Schindler crossed the equator while on board the Arizona in 1936. The following pages of the sailor’s log, however, are unfortunately blank.
The first page of the photo album section has affixed inside Schindler’s Navy Training Certificate for completing his Fireman Training Course. The document was awarded 7th August, 1936, and is signed by the Commander of the U.S.S. Arizona, Mervyn S. Bennion. Bennion commanded the U.S.S. West Virginia on December 7, 1941 and was Killed In Action during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Commander Bennion was prosthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on December 7th.
The following pages contain twenty-two photographs of sights around Waikiki, Honolulu, and of sailors on liberty in Hawaii. Three envelopes are contained in the album, two of which bear U.S.S. Arizona return addresses, and U.S.S. Arizona cancellation stamps.
Items associated with the U.S.S. Arizona are seldom found on the collector’s market today, especially those as early as this particular grouping. This is an outstanding piece of Arizona related history that is more than simply a material object, but offers primary source material that gives one a view into the daily shipboard life of a sailor in that time and place.
