Original Pre-WWII Polish Wz 22 Mauser Bayonet by Zbrojownia No. 4 in Krakow with German 1943 Dated 98K Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Poland stands between Germany and Russia and has been one of the most overrun countries in all of Europe. Throughout the ages foreign armies have marched across her bringing terrible destruction. Most notably the Mongols in the 16th through 17th centuries followed by just about everybody else in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was only after WWI that Poland as an independent country emerged once again. That didn't last long, in 1939 both the Germans and the Russians invaded and again Poland was subjugated until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

This bayonet was Poland’s first domestically produced example after WWI. This is a later pattern bayonet and was produced by Zbojownia Number 4 Arsenal in Krakow. It fits the Polish Mauser Karabin Wzór 98a, a derivative of the German Gewehr 98 bolt-action rifle. The bayonet was also essentially a modified copy of the K98 bayonet.

This example is marked Zbr4 on the bayonet ricasso, for the Zbrojownia No. 4 Arsenal in Krakow, Poland. The reverse ricasso bears the Polish double headed eagle proof mark and the letters W.P. (Wojsko Polskie = Polish Army). This example, like all WWII era issued bayonets, does not have a muzzle ring, just like the German Mauser bayonets.

The bayonet is correctly fitted with a flash guard on the grip spine and has a 9.75" blackened steel blade with a fuller down each side. The hilt is still fitted with the original bolt retained wooden grips. The bayonet catch is functional, and overall it is in very good condition. Many of these were refinished in black after capture by German forces, like this one.

However, it does come in a German 98K steel bayonet scabbard, dated 1943 and maker marked ffc for manufacture by well-known maker Friedr. Herder Abr. Sohn of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in Eastern Germany. This most likely indicates that it was captured and used by German forces after they occupied Poland.

These bayonets were used by the Polish Army in the defense of Poland during the September Campaign against German troops, using the similar Karabiner 98k. After the defeat of Poland, they were used by the guerrillas of the Polish Underground.

Offered in overall very good condition, this a most desirable hard to find WWII era bayonet, complete with a German scabbard. Ready to display or fit to your Karabin Wzór 98a rifle!
