Original Pre-WWI Massive Heavily Silver Decorated Yemeni Jambiya Dagger Sword with Scabbard and Belt

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Jambiya, also spelled janbia, janbiya, and jambia (Arabic: جنبية‎ janbīyah), is the Arabic term for dagger, but it is generally used to describe a specific type of dagger with a short curved blade. The term jambiya is used in various Arab countries and India, it is closely associated with the people of Yemen and is prevalent among Muslim men in the Horn of Africa (primarily the Afars of Djibouti).

If you look at original photographs of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA in his traditional Arab robes, this is exactly the type of ARAB Dagger he carried in his waist band. This is the Classic Arab Dagger of the Sinai and great deserts of the Middle East that stretch all the way down to Yemen and the Oman on the Indian Ocean.

This is a magnificent example, from the country of Yemen on the end of the Arabian Peninsula. The blade measures a huge 17 1/2" out of the 23" overall length, and has to be the largest Jambiya that we have ever handled! It is more of a short sword than a dagger at this size! It features the standard curved blade with a central spine, and is wicked sharp on both sides, so please handle with care! The grip looks to be dark dyed wood, and is almost completely covered in decorated silver panels including 6 silver knobs, a style we have seen on other jambiyas from this region. There are also embossed sheet silver wrappings and rosettes around the knobs.

The dagger is contained in its matching wood lined silver and brass heavily decorated scabbard. This in turn comes complete with its original worked wide leather and canvas waist belt, including old iron buckle. The belt is in relatively delicate condition, with pieces literally falling off, so we do not recommend attempting to wear it. It measures approximately 30 inches in length.

Almost certainly a War Trophy brought back from the Desert Campaign during WWI. by some soldier so he could relate his brave deeds of battle to his Grand Children.

Truly outstanding, just as it came from possibly almost 100 years in someone's attic, "Sleeper". Ready to Display!
