Original Item: One of a Kind. Now this is something that we have not had before! This is a truly lovely flintlock pocket pistol, which we believe originates from Poland. Located just to the east of Germany, the pistol shows some obvious similarities in design to the German pistols of the time. This example is definitely a very upmarket example, featuring fully engraved and embossed polished iron fittings, and the stock also has lovely carving and embellishments around the barrel and borders. The pistol definitely shows a level of artistry we are not used to seeing on something as utilitarian as a pocket pistol, so we assume it was made from some one who had money to spare.
The only marking on the pistol is a script W. Dąbrowski on the top of the half-octagon barrel, located amidst some lovely engraved designs. Overall the pistol measures 9 inches in length, with a 4 3/4 inch .39" caliber smoothbore barrel. The lock and side plate both depict crossed cannons and other stands of arms, possibly indicating the owner was related to the Artillery in Poland. It is outfit for a ramrod, however the rod currently in the slot is just a replacement piece of wood. We assume that this originally had an iron ramrod with an enlarged head.
Condition is just fantastic, with the wood showing very little in the way of wear or damage, and the ironwork showing a bit of an oxidized patina in a few areas, but mostly retaining the original bright polished steel finish. The lock features a reinforcement bridle for the frizzen, so we assume this was made during the early 19th century. The lock is functional, but does not hold at half cock due to wear.
A beautiful and very interesting Polish flintlock pistol, ready to research and display!
