  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an excellent original Polish interwar bronze sculpture depicting a running Polish infantryman with his rifle carried across his back, wearing the distinctive Polish rogatywka four-cornered cap and an open-collar military tunic. The sculpture is signed and dated W. Bielinski 1928 on the modeled ground beside the figure, firmly placing it within the early years of the Second Polish Republic and attributing it to noted Polish sculptor and medalist Witold Bieliński (1879–1944).

His specialties became portrait sculptures and medals. In 1909 he won first prize in a competition of the Numismatic Society of Cracow for a medal of Governor of Galicia Andrzej hr. Potocki, and in 1912 he won first prize in a competition for a jubilee medal of Piotr Skarga. After 1912 he lived in Poznan. He also exhibited two paintings in Warsaw's Zachęta Gallery, Song and Orphan.

The bronze statue measures 12 ¼” tall including the base, which is 3 ¼ x 5” and the same material as the bronze itself. The base has several small green felt pieces on the bottom, but a couple have come off and others may follow.

There is no noticeable damage to the bronze, but on the lower base, someone tried to rewrite the signature on the side of the ground due to it being worn, but they got several letters wrong. The original signature reads “W. Bielinski 1928”.

This is an outstanding and scarce bronze statue of a Polish soldier from the very early years of the Second Republic.

This example is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its 1928 date, original W. Bielinski signature, bronze construction, dynamic infantry subject, rogatywka cap, and clear association with the military imagery of the Second Polish Republic. Its surviving original signature is especially important as it identifies the sculptor and date.
