Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic and rather sturdy Pirah style short bolo sword with an interesting clip point. Most of the Filipinos were quick to take advantage of the fact that the “yanks” were noted souvenir hunters. With this knowledge, plenty of shops opened up and some people even converted their homes into souvenir shops to take advantage of the allied troops in the area, that was quite a racket they had going on!
Pirah or pira is a type of Philippine bolo sword or knife characterized by a heavy blade and a wide tip. It superficially resembles a falchion but is much heavier. It is the traditional weapon favored by the Yakan people of Basilan Island. It usually features a kakatua ("cockatoo") hilt, which among the Yakan is distinctively elongated to function as arm support. Among Cebuano people and other Visayans, a similar sword is also known as the pira, but differs in that it has an acutely pointed tip. Like other bolos, pirah were commonly used as farm implements, in addition to being used in combat.
This example is in fantastic condition and has no movement in any of the components, which is a rarity when it comes to these bringbacks! The blade measures 16 ½” and tapers into a clip point. The wood handle measures 6” and has a 3” brass crossguard, all components in wonderful condition.
The 16 ¼” leather scabbard is in wonderful condition though it is missing a small portion on the tip, which leaves the tip of the blade exposed so handle with caution. There is no belt loop attachment present and the stitching is still very solid and intact.
A lovely bolo sword that comes more than ready for display.
