  • Original Item: Only One Available. A shamshir (Persian: شمشیر‬‎) is a type of Persian/Iranian sword with a radical curve. The name is derived from shamshīr, which means "sword" (in general). The curved sword family includes the shamshir, scimitar, talwar, kilij, pulwar and sabre. It was also used in Arabia, there known as the Saif (سيف). The design spread throughout the Islamic world, and into the Ottoman Empire.

This is a typical Ottoman Shamshir made with a "Trophy" blade from Hungary. There was much strife between the Ottoman Empire and Hungary during the 17th and 18th centuries. This gave the Ottoman turks plenty of chances to capture these well-made blades. The lovely curved triple fullered saber blade engraved with a Hungarian Hussar Officer amid Latin text, which dates to the early 1700's. It has the Hungarian Eagle over vincére aut mo Hungaria, which is an abbreviation for Vincére Aut Mori Pro Hungaria, which translates to "Conquer or Die for Hungary".

Research indicates that these blades were not made in Hungary itself, but in Germany, most likely in the "City of Blades" in Western Germany, Solingen. There is the marking M & C on one side, and the other side has a moon over Eisenhauer (Iron Hewer).

The heavy blade was remounted around 1800/1850 as an Ottoman Empire Officer's Shamshir Sword complete with decorated brass hilt with wood grip scales. This comes  complete with its Ottoman SILVER inlaid steel mounted leather bound over wood scabbard.
