Original Ornate Indian 17th-18th Century Mughal Zahgnal Battle Axe with Decorated Bone Handle

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. These are not only very unusual but also extremely RARE, and this is the first example that we have had! Known as a Mughal Empire Era "ZAHNGAL" Battle Axe, these usually date to the 17th Century. They were introduced first in Northern India by the Muslim Iranian "Mughals," who took over most of India in the 1600s, and controlled it until the 19th century.

The axe head on this example most likely dates to the late 17th - early 18th century, and definitely shows a great patina. The 5 1/2" long main blade has two large cats at the base, as well as some floral embossed designs, while the finial has an elephant, which we have seen on many other examples. The top of the head is adorned by a 3 1/2" spike.

The handle looks to be an early 19th century replacement, made from several pieces of decorated bone or possibly walrus ivory. It has been carved and inlaid with colored enamel. Our example is very old and originates from an old collection, so it is fresh to the market. It shows use and honest wear, with a great patina on the axe head.

Very rare and very old. A very nice original Mughal Zahgnal Battle Axe, ready to display!
