Original Item: Only One Available. This is an interesting original Vietnam War-era handmade flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, or North Vietnam, measuring approximately 29 x 42 inches. The flag is constructed from a red field with a separately sewn yellow five-pointed star, with improvised brown shoelace loops stitched to two corners for hanging. It was likely brought back to the United States during the Vietnam War.
The flag follows the national design used by North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, consisting of a large yellow five-pointed star centered on a red field. This design had been adopted by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam before the major period of U.S. involvement and remained the North Vietnamese national flag throughout the war. The flag measures approximately 29 inches high by 42 inches long and has a distinctly handmade appearance.
The flag has two small brown shoelace pieces used as hanging loops stitched to two corners. The yellow star is stitched into the hole to be shown on both sides, but there is some stitching missing so the star is partially detached. The flag appears to have been designed with a header, but someone stitched the holes shut and attached the shoelace loops.
There is some fraying of the red along the star edges. This example has very little wear and was likely captured and sent home.
This example is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its handmade construction, separately sewn double-sided yellow star, improvised shoelace hanging loops, and altered hoist. Its non-standard construction gives it considerably more individual character than a factory-produced flag and makes it a strong representative piece of North Vietnamese wartime material culture.
