  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent original Dutch WWII Model 1934 steel helmet, complete with its original national lion badge, three-section leather liner, chinstrap, and substantial original paint. The exterior is painted with a red band around the circumference, denoting wear by the Netherlands Civil Protection. The M34 was one of the principal combat helmets worn by the Royal Netherlands Army at the outbreak of WWII and is immediately recognizable by its distinctive shell profile and applied metal shield at the front.

The front retains the original inlaid copper shield bearing the crowned Dutch lion from the national coat of arms. The steel shell retains its original painted finish and remains in very good overall condition. Under the badge around the helmet is a painted red band, which we have found to denote issue to the Netherlands Civil Protection. The approximate size is 58 cm, roughly equivalent to a U.S. size 7 ¼.

The interior retains the correct three-section leather liner, with very little degradation or serious wear. The rear neck cover is in good order and the original tie string is retained. The leather chinstrap is still present, making this a notably complete example. There is an interesting stenciled marking under the rear brim, reading:

    UIV. BRM
    BLOK 5

The BLOK 5 designation strongly suggests assignment within a local civil-defense sector or block system, though the precise meaning of the preceding abbreviation remains uncertain and offers an excellent avenue for further research.

The combination of the original M34 shell, national lion badge, complete liner and chinstrap, surviving wartime finish, later red civil-protection band, and BLOK 5 stencil makes this a particularly interesting helmet with service extending beyond its original combat role. Rather than being simply a WWII Dutch helmet, it preserves evidence of the extended secondary use that many M34 helmets experienced in Dutch civil protection after their front-line military service had ended.

The Netherlands sought to maintain its neutrality following the outbreak of WWII in September 1939, as it had during the First World War. That position ended on May 10, 1940, when German forces invaded the country. Dutch troops resisted for several days, but following the bombing of Rotterdam and the threat of further destruction, the principal Dutch forces capitulated on May 15, 1940. The German occupation of the Netherlands continued until the closing months of the war, with the southern portions of the country liberated beginning in 1944 and the remaining occupied territories liberated in May 1945.

The Dutch M34 is closely associated with the brief but intense fighting of May 1940 and represents one of the most recognizable pieces of prewar Royal Netherlands Army equipment. This example is particularly desirable for its original paint, surviving copper lion badge, complete three-section liner assembly, and leather chinstrap. The heavy wear and damage to the liner remain clearly evident, but the survival of these components together makes the helmet a strong representative example of Dutch military equipment from the opening campaign in Western Europe.
