Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original Dutch WWII Model 1934 steel helmet, complete with its original national lion badge, three-section leather liner, chinstrap, and substantial original paint. The M34 was one of the principal combat helmets worn by the Royal Netherlands Army at the outbreak of WWII and is immediately recognizable by its distinctive shell profile and applied metal shield at the front.
The front retains the original inlaid copper shield bearing the crowned Dutch lion from the national coat of arms. The steel shell retains its original painted finish and remains in very good overall condition. The approximate size is 58 cm, roughly equivalent to a U.S. size 7 ¼.
The interior retains the correct three-section leather liner, though the leather exhibits very heavy age and service wear. The rear section is particularly fragile, with substantial cracking and some portions already torn away. The original liner tie is no longer present and has been replaced at some point with a twisted wire tie. The leather chinstrap is still present, making this a notably complete example despite the deterioration to the liner.
The back flap of the liner is cracking with some of it already torn away. The tie string for the liner is a wire twist tie.
The Netherlands sought to maintain its neutrality following the outbreak of WWII in September 1939, as it had during the First World War. That position ended on May 10, 1940, when German forces invaded the country. Dutch troops resisted for several days, but following the bombing of Rotterdam and the threat of further destruction, the principal Dutch forces capitulated on May 15, 1940. The German occupation of the Netherlands continued until the closing months of the war, with the southern portions of the country liberated beginning in 1944 and the remaining occupied territories liberated in May 1945.
The Dutch M34 is closely associated with the brief but intense fighting of May 1940 and represents one of the most recognizable pieces of prewar Royal Netherlands Army equipment. This example is particularly desirable for its original paint, surviving copper lion badge, complete three-section liner assembly, and leather chinstrap. The heavy wear and damage to the liner remain clearly evident, but the survival of these components together makes the helmet a strong representative example of Dutch military equipment from the opening campaign in Western Europe.
