Original Napoleonic Pair of British Naval Carved Oak Lion’s Heads Removed from H.M.S. LION in 1837

Original Items: One of a Kind Pair. This is a fantastic pair of Oak wood carved Lion's heads, each measuring approximately 12" Tall, 7 1/2" Wide and 6 1/2" Deep. These were probably originally mounted inside the Captain's Cabin. There is a brass plaque on each stating that these were recovered from this Royal Naval Warship at its "breaking up" at CHATHAM in 1837:

The back of each has a metal hanger loop, both of which are marked BROAD ARROW / IR, so they look to have been officially issued.
H.M.S. Lion was a 64-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, of the Worcester class, launched on 3 September 1777 at Portsmouth Dockyard under Captain William Cornwallis. She took part in the Battle of Grenada but was badly damaged in 1779. Returned to England in 1780 with Horatio Nelson on board who was ill with Malaria. Traveled to China in 1793 and then Cape Town in 1796. The LION took part in the MUTINY AT THE NORE in 1797 and later in 1798 captured the Spanish warship SANTA DORATEA. She took part in the SIEGE OF MALTA and captured the 80 gun Battle ship GUILLAUME TELL, which was later commissioned by the Royal Navy as H.M.S. MALTA.
In 1807 she captured the French frigate SEMILLANTE in the Malacca Strait on its way back from CHINA. H.M.S. LION took part in the Capture of the Island of JAVA from the Dutch. In 1816, the Napoleonic Wars being over she was retired and later SOLD OFF to be BROKEN UP at CHATHAM in 1837.
