Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This type of Pistol was manufactured in Belgium, which was under Napoleon Bonaparte's control until 1814. It was also made after the battle of Waterloo in 1815 and very possibly into the 1820's. Belgium was an Industrial powerhouse, with its great capacity coming from the City of Liège, where gun making was a key industry, and would end up supplying Military Weapons all over Europe after Belgian Independence in 1830.
There is no provision for ramrod, the mounts are all of brass and the grade of manufacture is really quite high. Probably one of the most encountered original flintlock martial pistols from Europe encountered to day. There are few maker markings on the gun, except for a CROWN over DN proof mark on the lock plate just rear of the pan. This is an arsenal stamp indicating "Delft Nederlandse", indicating it was processed at arsenal there before being dispersed into service.
What makes the one we are offering however is that it appears to have been in British hands at some time, as the barrel is marked Acheron, together with it's Deck number and rack position B / 17. The British made marvelous Flintlock Pistols and there was no way a Continental pistol would have been issue other than perhaps having been taken in battle and incorporated into Ship's Armory through need. Markings at that time were put on weapons so that each man or ship could account for their own weapons and not be liable to easy theft.
The H.M.S. Acheron was launched in 1803, and on 4th of Feb 1805 she was leading a convey with H.M.S Arrow sloop. Acheron had an armament of eight 24 lb guns, and engaged the French frigate Hortense, which with 40 guns was more than a match for the smaller ship. After a battle the Acheron's Captain struck his colors, and the French took the British crew as prisoners end removed the weapons. The Acheron was so badly damaged that the French burnt her, instead of pressing her into service.
An interesting Belgian Flintlock pistols with Royal Navy Markings, in nice tight condition. Our example is in excellent condition, the lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and only firing at full cock. Fully cleaned and ready to display and research.
