Original Named "Display Size" U.S. Army M1860 Staff and Field Officer Sword with Scabbard & Sword Knot

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very interesting "Display" or "Child" size U.S. Army Model 1860 Staff and Field officer sword. It comes complete with a scabbard and plaited leather "sword knot", and was most likely intended for hanging on a wall as a display piece, not for actually wearing with the uniform. It is about 2/3 the size of the usual example, and has a cast metal plated hilt, wrapped with brass wife.

The blade is rather stout and pointed, making this almost look like a fire poker of some kind, which is entirely possible. The base of the blade is stamped with the name JOHN. K. AHRENS., so this may have been given as a gift for retirement or some other major life / service event.

The sword and fittings replicate those on the full size examples, down to the five pointed star and crossed flags on the scabbard drag. The "shell" guard has the U.S. Federal Eagle on it, with additional U.S. motifs on the rest of the handle.

A very interesting display piece, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. Ready to display!

The U.S. Army Model 1860 officer's sword was adopted on August 28, 1860 acting upon the officer who would rarely if ever be called upon to wield a sword in battle. It was not mandatory until after the close of the Civil War, however in 1872, this sword became mandatory for all officers except medical staff, paymasters, mounted officers of infantry, cavalry & light artillery.
