Original Mexican Republic Army Model 1822 Cavalry Saber with Scabbard circa 1835–1846

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. During the 19th Century, the Country of Mexico had a very tumultuous history, with a succession of different leaders and governments. In 1824, the The First Mexican Republic, known also as the First Federal Republic (Spanish: Primera República Federal) was formed, under the Constitution of 1824. This unfortunately did not go well, with the election of 1828 being heavily contested, and unrest continued.

Under Mexican army General Antonio López de Santa Anna, a former federalist turned centralist and eventual dictator, the conservative forces in Mexico suspended the 1824 Constitution and replaced it with the Siete Leyes ("Seven Laws") in 1835. The Seven Laws transformed the federated republic into a unitary state known as the Centralist Republic of Mexico (República Centralista de México).

The official name of this country was the Mexican Republic (República Mexicana), and it lasted from 1835–1846. It was during this period that Republic of Texas seceded from the Mexican Republic, and when the legendary "Battle of the Alamo" took place.

This Model 1822 Army Model 1822 Sword comes from that period, as indicated by the "Liberty Cap" with rays of sun logo over RM (República Mexicana) marking on the blade's ricasso. The reverse ricasso is marked A.C. over MEXICO, and this sword conforms exactly to other examples we have found.

The design is a typical cavalry saber of the time, with a 33" curved single edged fullered blade, and a 3 bar basket hilt. The guard is of steel, while the grip and pommel are bronze and brass, respectively. Condition of the hilt is very good, with the expected patination from age and use.

The steel blade has a lovely oxidized patina, with some minor staining and peppering. The edge has a few minor dents, but no significant ones. There is wear, especially near the transition from the ricasso.

The steel scabbard is in good condition, showing a lot of wear and rust degradation. It has surface oxidation, as well as some significant dents and bends. One of the two hanger rings is missing, replaced by an improvised leather loop.

Fascinating and just as it came out of the attic, and excellent collector's opportunity. Ready to be gently cleaned and put on display!
