  • Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a lovely lot of mid-19th century Mexican items, including a scarce piece of a mounted uniform with Mexican buttons, an embroidered section of an officer’s coatee, and a gorgeous bullion coat of arms for the Conciliar Seminary of Mexico, first established in 1585!

The coat of arms is of gorgeous bullion construction on a piece of blue velvet measuring 9½ x 16½”. It reads Mexiceum Conciliare Seminarium / Paule tu vas Electionis / En Claros Tandem Partos Certamine Triumphos. We were able to find that this was the coat of arms for the Conciliar Seminary of Mexico. The Third Mexican Provincial Council of 1585 discussed the foundation of a conciliar seminary for Mexico. In 1592 Philip II of Spain issued a royal decree which ordered seminaries to be founded in all of New Spain's vice-regalities, but the foundation of a conciliar one proved slow. It took until 1 October 1689, when viceroy Conde de Galve and Francisco de Aguiar, Archbishop of Mexico agreed by decree to found a conciliar seminary and on 18 October the same year the archbishop blessed the start of grammar and morality classes.

The seminary matured between the early 18th and late 19th centuries. It took a major part in the enacting of Mexico's reform laws in 1860 and the following year it was closed and its property next to the Metropolitan Cathedral was expropriated. It then re-opened and moved into the former convent of the Camilo Fathers.

The mounted uniform bib certainly belonged to the uniform of a Mexican Cavalryman during the mid-19th Century, and still retains three buttons reading Ejercito Federal Republica Mexicana, for the Federal Army of the Mexican Republic. There is also an interesting repair to one side. The bib measures 13¾ x 14¼”.

The embroidered section of an officer’s coatee measures 12¼ x 15½” and has torn remnants of the underlying material attached to the back. The bullion is gorgeous on this example. There is a large circular blue wool pad on back, the purpose of which we are unsure.

This is a great lot of mid-19th century Mexican artifacts, a period that is almost impossible to collect from due to its scarcity. Comes ready for further research and display.
