Original Item: Only One Available. This is magnificent and looks almost untouched, even though it has been completely cleaned. It features a classic "banana" shaped lock plate of totally classic German "angular" style, which is marked POTZDAM MAGAZ. It is also marked D S E on the edge of the lock plate. Many muskets produced is during the mid-late 18th century in Potsdam were marked as such during the reign of the Prussian King Frederick the Great, who reigned until 1786.
It was muskets such as these that the German "Hessian" Soldiers that fought in the U.S. Revolution were armed with. Some may have also been supplied to British forces during the French & Indian War, as the British Monarchs of the House of Hanover concurrently held titles in Germany as well. Musket comes complete with original Socket bayonet and old black leather sling from the 19th century, secured by two shirt stud type iron keepers.
This substantial German musket has a 41 inch long barrel held on by pins through the stock, and measures 57 1/2 inches in overall length. All brass Regulation mounts of angular design are polished bright, almost like the day it was issued. There is a brass escutcheon on the back of the wrist, which looks to have a coat of arms on it, which we are unfortunately unable to identify. There are also some proof marks on the breech end of the barrel as well.
Condition is simply excellent, and we will unlikely ever see another this good. The stock is incredible, well carved with embellishments around all of the fittings. It has a beautiful color, and we do not see any structural damage. The metalwork is also lovely, with the barrel having a lovely aged patina. We checked the lock, and it functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full. It still has the correct HEAVY ramrod, with intact threads on the front end. The included bayonet shows its age but fits perfectly. It has a lovely aged patina matching the barrel.
The musket and bayonet, totally original, are just an amazing sight. From an old U.S. collection of French and Indian War and Revolutionary War items that we purchased from an exceptionally reputable source.
Very possibly the finest example existing today. NOT TO BE MISSED!
