Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very rare and most impressive Spanish Flintlock Dragoon Cavalry Pistol, probably the first that we have ever had! The Spanish Regulation Model 1873 pistol is a design that saw extensive service on both land and sea in the Seven Years’ War and American and French Revolutionary Wars. It is substantially constructed with lovely all brass mountings, including a lovely long eared butt cap and escutcheon on the back of the grip. The flint lock has characteristic "flat" jaws on the hammer, a holdover from the Miquelet locks used previously.
The stock shows some lovely carving around all of the fittings, making it quite lovely. There is a date of 1781 on the top facet of the barrel nocks form, with EX G on the left side, and a faded marking on the right facet. There are also faded markings on the lock plate, definitely a great avenue for further research!
The pistol has an overall length of 19 inches, and is fitted with a 11 ½ inch smoothbore barrel with a caliber of approximately .70". There is a brass tipped wooden ramrod under the barrel, however we believe that it may be a replacement from the 19th century. The barrel shows a lovely aged polished patina, while the brass fittings have a beautiful mellow glow. The stock is in very nice shape, showing some substantial wood graft repairs in the fore stock area. We checked the lock action, and it is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full. The trigger must be pulled back hard however, or the hammer may get stuck at half cock.
A lovely 18th Century Spanish Dragoon pistol, ready to research and display!
