Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely late 18th Century German hunting pistol, originally made as a flintlock but later converted to the superior cap lock system, as with many arms of the time. It is not signed, perhaps with the markings lost at the time of conversion to the percussion cap system. It features exceptional quality embossed decorative “GERMAN” NICKEL SILVER mounts of Butt Cap, Trigger Guard, Side plate, Escutcheon and two ramrod pipes. These display all manner of animal life related to hunting, including stags, does, hunting dogs, and what looks to be a fox.
The pistol features a smoothbore barrel just over 8 1/2" in length, and measures 14 1/4 inches in overall length. The fruit wood stock is carved with scroll decorations around the silver mounts. The pistol also features a lovely bone nose cap, and there is a horn tipped ramrod under the barrel.
Condition is very good overall, showing a lovely matured patina on the metalwork, with the nickel silver showing a lovely glow. The carved wooden stock has some lovely figuring in the grain, though it is cracked through the wrist and there is also cracking along the right fore stock area. We checked the lock, and it is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A truly magnificent German hunting pistol worthy of further research. Ready to display!
