This is an excellent example of a rather hard to find Kingdom of Italy Campaign Medal for the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901, awarded for participation from 1900 to 1901. The Eight-Nation Alliance was a multinational military coalition that invaded northern China in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion, with the stated aim of relieving the foreign legations in Beijing, which was being besieged by the popular Boxer militiamen, who were determined to remove foreign imperialism in China. The allied forces consisted of about 45,000 troops from the eight nations of Germany, Japan, Russia, Britain, France, the United States, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. Neither the Chinese nor the quasi-concerted foreign allies issued a formal declaration of war.

The medal is unnamed as issued. Obverse: The bust of Victor Emanuel III facing left with the inscription 'VICTORIO EMANUELE III RE D'ITALIA' around the circumference. Reverse: 'CINA 1900-1901' on two lines within a laurel wreath. The medal is fitted with a fixed bar suspender and a piece of 38 mm blue ribbon that has a 10 mm center stripe and a 5 mm stripe on each side in yellow.

Awarded to the Italian Marines and the crews of two Italian ships that formed part of the multi-national force to serve in China during the Boxer Uprising of 1900-01. It is believed that the silver medal was issued to the ships officers and 80 marines who served on land whereas the bronze medal was issued to the ships crews like this example.
