Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Set. Japanese communications in general comprise a complex, modern (at the time) system, highly flexible and efficient. Older equipment was considered obsolete by American standards but was ruggedly built. At the time, the newest enemy equipment compared favorably with the current American models. There is some evidence that the system was handicapped by a shortage of trained personnel, but an evident determination existed to make the best use of the existing facilities.
This is a tremendous pair of Japanese Type 92 Field Telephones captured and brought back to the United States by Private First Class Morris Wizot, Company C, 323nd Engineer Battalion. The phones come with Wizot’s original capture paper, Dated December 3rd, 1945. The description of the article is 2 Japanese Telephones, and the form is signed by 1st Lieutenant Fuller of the 323rd Engineer Battalion. The paper measures 4½ x 8” and is a fantastic piece of provenance that provides every bit of context for these two telephones.
The telephones are in varying degrees of condition. Both telephones retain their headset, but only one of the phones retains the second single microphone. They both retain their front data plates with the first bearing serial number 170098 with a date of 1943, and the second bearing serial number 192116 with a date of 1944.
The units have not been function-tested and we cannot guarantee they are operational and able to used as communications equipment. The overall condition of both are good and still solid, but they could do with a cleaning of the internal components.
These would make for an excellent display to have amongst your WWII Imperial Japanese Army displays. A great pair of documented captured Japanese field telephones, ready for further research and display!
