Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely USGI Bring Back from WWII: an original Japanese WWII "Meatball" National flag, captured and personalized by the soldier who captured it, Joseph Silva of the 127th Bakery Company, stationed in Juso Osaka, Japan from 1945-1946. Silva stenciled his name & unit along with a travel diary of the cities/towns in Japan that he visited there.
The flag measures 26½ x 36”, and looks to be made from silk or rayon, and is in fair shape with the two silver corner reinforcements still intact with their ropes, though there is wear. The body of the flag is white, with a red "sun round" dyed into the middle. The flag is in very good condition which makes sense as this was not a battlefield-captured flag but instead a flag signed by men during the Occupation of Japan. It has the expected age toning, and areas where the fabric has torn due to wear. This example would look amazing in a frame.
The stenciled locations include NEW GINAN P.I., YOKOHAMA, SASEHO, NAGOYA, OSAKA, KYOTO, and KOBE. New Ginan appears to be a location in the Philippine Islands that Silva also visited. The flag has some staining and fold creasing.
Ready to frame and display.
