Original Item: Only One Available. This is a good original WWII Imperial Japanese Army Type 90 steel helmet shell, officially known as the Tetsubō (鉄帽, “steel cap”) and also commonly referred to as the Tetsukabuto (鉄冑, “steel helmet”). This is a heavily service-worn and oxidized relic example retaining its original applied Army star and remnants of the original exterior paint. The leather liner and chinstrap are no longer present, leaving the interior liner fittings exposed.
Features include:
- Original metal star applied to front.
- Original paint with very heavy wear and oxidation, showing the "blue" manganese steel underneath the helmet. The liner fittings have heavy oxidation as well.
- Kanji character 大 for Large is stamped into the rear metal rim and painted in white.
A nice shell example without the liner or chinstrap, good for a representative piece. These helmets are continuing to become harder and harder to find on the market. The helmet was officially termed Tetsubō, literally “steel cap,” while Tetsukabuto, or “steel helmet,” was also used colloquially. Its rounded dome and short surrounding brim became one of the most recognizable elements of Imperial Japanese field equipment during the war.
Type 90 shells are generally described as being manufactured from chrome-molybdenum steel, with surviving examples often showing a dark or blued steel surface beneath the exterior brown or ochre paint. The exposed dark metal visible on this helmet is therefore better described simply as the underlying steel finish rather than specifically as manganese steel.
This example is especially useful as an untouched relic representative of the Type 90 pattern, retaining the original Army star, remnants of the wartime paint, surviving liner hardware, and clearly visible 大 Large-size marking despite the loss of the liner and chinstrap. The extensive oxidation and paint loss are central to its condition, but they also leave the helmet’s construction and underlying metal surface clearly visible, making it a straightforward and honest example of the standard Imperial Japanese Army steel helmet of WWII.
