Original Japanese WWII Type 90 Army Helmet with Complete Liner and Partial Chinstrap - Tetsubo

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very good service-worn example of the standard Japanese Type 90 Tetsubo (鉄帽, “steel cap”) Army helmet used throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War and WWII. It retains its original Army star, complete three-pad leather liner with all three internal cushions and center tie string, and a partial original cloth chinstrap.
Features include:
- Original metal star applied to front.
- Complete three pad leather liner, with all 3 pads still intact without any serious dry-rotting, and not much loss of material. The liner is still connected at the three pins. The pillows all appear present inside along with the original tie string in the center.
- Original, partial tie down chinstrap. Only one end is retained, as the other has torn away.
- Original paint with very heavy exterior wear, with much of it now appearing a bit gray/white, with some areas of loss showing the "blue" manganese steel underneath the helmet. The liner fittings have oxidation as well.
- Approximate size is 6 ⅞.
- There are no retained stamped markings under the rear brim, so we are unsure of the size of the helmet.
The Type 90 employed a three-pad leather liner system derived from earlier Japanese helmet designs. Each leather pad contained a cushion, while the pads were joined by a central adjustment cord. The long cloth chinstrap used a distinctive Japanese multi-point arrangement and was normally tied rather than secured with a conventional metal buckle.
The helmet’s simple oval shell, Army star, three-pad liner, and cloth chinstrap became one of the most recognizable elements of Imperial Japanese Army equipment during WWII.
This example is particularly appealing for the completeness of its interior. The original star, all three leather pads, their internal cushions, center tie string, and surviving chinstrap section remain in place despite extensive exterior service wear. The missing portion of the chinstrap, oxidation, paint loss, and absence of readable rear shell markings are important condition factors, but the helmet remains a strong representative example of the standard Japanese Type 90 Army helmet.
