  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rare original Japanese WWII Type 100 81mm High Explosive mortar projectile, completely inert and retaining excellent original black paint, its yellow identification band, red-painted upper area, and extensive Japanese markings. The projectile itself is dated July 1943, while the separately fitted Type 88 fuze is dated March 1939. Importantly, wartime U.S. Ordnance documentation identifies the Type 100 fuze, rather than the Type 88, as the standard fuze for the 81mm Type 100 projectile, so the present Type 88 should be regarded as a later or otherwise non-standard pairing rather than assumed to be original to this round.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in a BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

This is a rare example of the Japanese Type 100 HE Mortar Round used with the Type 97 (1937) and later the Type 99 small trench mortar. This is based on the Stokes-Brandt design, as was the U.S. 81mm, and this round was actually interchangeable with the U.S. M43A1 shell.

The Japanese Type 100 round had a maximum range of about 3,000 yards. Loaded weight: ~3kg (6.9lbs) of which 1 pound was TNT. This round is complete with an impact fuse, which is removable for inspection of the interior. The bottom fins / propellant charge is also not able to be removed. It still has the original black paint with a yellow stripe and red at the top, with great retention.

There is however a stamped arsenal marking on the body of the round, which is a date next to it: 7 八 十 昭. This marking is written right to left, and would be read: SHOWA (current reigning emperor) Juu-Hachi Nen (18th year of reign - 1943). The western "7" most likely indicates the month of July. There are great ink stamps on the body as well, with the left column reading 100 式 or 100 Shiki (Type / Model).

The fuse has a small wire wrapped around it. There are clear markings reading 3 四 十 昭, for March 1939 (Showa 14). The fuze retains the button at the top which does not push in because it is not armed, a great detail.

The Japanese Type 100 round had a maximum range of about 3,000 yards. Loaded weight: ~3kg (6.9lbs) of which 1 pound was TNT. This round is complete, except that fuze assembly is completely missing. The top cap is also not currently removable nor is the fin assembly. It would appear that all components were sealed in order to prevent any tampering during the demilitarization process.

The combination of the original black finish, surviving yellow identification band and red upper paint, Japanese Type 100 ink markings, July 1943 projectile date, separately dated March 1939 Type 88 fuze, surviving wire and upper fuze component, and intact fin assembly makes this an especially interesting Japanese WWII ordnance display. The differing component dates and non-standard Type 88 fuze pairing are important aspects of the artifact and are preserved here rather than presenting the assembly as an untouched factory configuration.
