Original Japanese WWII Shikishima Female Home Front Association 29 x 38" Flag with Stand in Carry Case

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. During WWII, like most countries, Japan had various associations supporting the war effort, often called "Home Front Associations". Here we have a very nice flag set, which looks to have been used by the "Shikishima Female Patriots Association", per a little tag attached to the flag. We are not entirely sure of the translation, but we can definitely see the kanji 敷島 - Shiki Shima (Scattered Islands) in the flag. We assume this refers to Shikishima (敷島町, Shikishima-machi), a town located in Nakakoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan.

This is a very nice cased flag set from the area, which consists of a decorative fringed flag, a three piece long black hanging pole with a pole topper, and a metal tripod stand to hold the pole while in use. The flag itself is very decorative, and measures 29" by 38", with a very attractive purple fringe going around three of four sides. The body of the flag is red, with a wreathed "Rising Sun" in the middle, and kanji off to the right side. It has gold corner reinforcements with metal grommets through them, and yellow tasseled ropes looped through them.

The pole is wood and assembles from three pieces, measuring 76" long when fully assembled with the holly brass Imperial Japanese Chrysanthemum pole topper. It has two hanging rings on ferrules, which allow the flag to be attached. There is also a metal "thimble" end fitting for the bottom of the pole, however the cross pin for this is missing, so it is not currently attached to the pole. The tripod unfolds correctly, and allows the flag to be hung at two different angles, based on where the base is placed.

When the flag is being transported, the stand breaks down into components, which have storage bags. These fit along with the flag into a very nice faux reptile skin covered carrying case, which measures "36 x 7" x 5". It still has a handle and functional latches, though due to the age we would not recommend using the handle anymore, as we do not know if the latches will hold.

Very interesting and colorful, as well as full of research potential. Ready to display!
