Original Item: Only One Available. This is a good original Japanese WWII Type 100 81mm high-explosive mortar projectile, completely inert and presently fitted with an inert Type 88 fuze. The projectile itself is dated May 1941, while the fuze is separately dated June 1941. The entire exterior has been repainted black at some point, most likely in comparatively recent years.
Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.
The Japanese Type 100 HE Mortar Round was used with the Type 97 (1937) and later the Type 99 small trench mortar. This is based on the Stokes-Brandt design, as was the U.S. 81mm, and this round was actually interchangeable with the U.S. M43A1 shell.
The entire round has been repainted in black, likely recently. There is a date on the round itself, 5 六 十 昭., for May 1941 (Showa 16). The fuze is stamped with a date, 6 六 十 昭., for June 1941 (Showa 16).
The Japanese Type 100 round had a maximum range of about 3,000 yards. Loaded weight: ~3kg (6.9lbs) of which 1 pound was TNT. This round is complete, and the fuze is removable for inspection of the interior. Besides the repaint, this is a good overall example.
The combination of the original May 1941 Type 100 projectile, June 1941 Type 88 fuze, complete fin assembly, and fully inert configuration makes this a useful example of Japanese WWII mortar ammunition, while the repaint and non-standard fuze association are important originality considerations for collectors.
