Original Item. Only One Available. This is a particularly interesting grouping of two original Japanese WWII aviation navigation computers, consisting of the distinctive Type 3 “Frying Pan” Flight Computer and a Type 4 knee-board navigation calculator. Both were designed to assist aircrews with route, distance, and navigation calculations during flight and represent specialized pieces of Japanese wartime aviation equipment.
The Type 3 comes in its original now-partial shipping crate with many of the wood pieces now broken off. The Type 3 retains the original data plate translating to Aviation Flight Computer Type 3 showing the manufacturer as Sokkisha Ltd.. The date is not filled out. The serial number is stamped 400896. Also with the set is the original glass disc that goes inside.
The Type 3 crate also retains a data plate, denoting it as a Aviation Flight Computer Type 3 by Kabushiki-gaisha Sokkisha, Sokkisha Co., Ltd.. It has the matching serial number, 400896. As mentioned the box is in pieces due to its fragile construction. It measures approximately 13" x 8" x 1 3/4".
The included Type 4 Flight Computer is in great shape with all pieces still working and the roll of paper still functional. It retains the straps which were used to strap it to the user’s thigh during flight. The data plate is retained, which marks it as a Type 4 Flight Navigation Calculator, manufactured by the Fuchikami Instrument Company. It is stamped with an anchor denoting Naval Aviation use, with serial number 403908.
The combination of the matched Sokkisha Type 3 computer and partial shipping crate, serial number 400896, surviving glass calculation disc, Fuchikami Type 4 knee-board computer, Naval anchor marking, serial number 403908, intact thigh straps, and functional paper mechanism makes this an unusually complete grouping of specialized Japanese WWII flight-navigation equipment. Together, the two instruments illustrate different approaches to the practical navigation and calculation requirements faced by Japanese aircrews during wartime operations.
