This is an original Japanese WWII Type 89 Grenade that was taken by an American soldier during WWII as a souvenir of the war. He painted it red and black and wrote MARSHALL ISLANDS 1944 across the top along with two Japanese flags, then mounted a removable brass cigarette holder and ash tray to the top.
This is a classic bit of WWII Pacific Theater trench art that is becoming so hard to find these days and adds a bit of color and conversation to any WW2 collection.
