Item Description
Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a great lot of Japanese field gear including three canteens and one Model B Shelter half.
In Japanese the shelter half is called Keitai Tenmaku (携帯天幕), which means portable tent. Tenmaku consists of the words “Ten” meaning “Heavens” and “Maku” meaning “Curtain/Screen”. So in Japanese it was literally a “portable overhead tarp” without any fractional concept like half or quarter.
For over 40 years the IJA shelter half changed in various ways. The last recorded change to shelter half specs was announced on 20th November 1941 as Army Ordinance 82, which added that leather reinforcements would also be accepted in lieu of the aluminum grommets. This happened to be the same ordinance that also introduced the tie cords for the canteen stoppers instead of the leather strap and buckle system. In the 1943 army spec book this 1941 version is referred to as Model Ro (Model B). In this case, the M1912 with aluminum grommets would have been Model I (Model A). Collectors seem to associate leather tabs on shelter halves to be a feature adopted only after 1944, but they were already allowed on an optional basis from late 1941.
The shelter half has some damage as shown, but it is difficult to find these with the leather grommets as opposed to aluminum. There are many period repairs to some damage. The shelter half is also named to S. ITO. The shelter half measures 56 1/2” x 59”.
The canteens included are:
-1905-WWI Period Japanese Canteen with the updated canvas suspension harness which dates from the WWI era. One side of the strap is disconnected, and the canteen is missing its cap. The buckle has oxidation as shown and some paint is missing, but there’s a Japanese character painted on one side. Great example.
-1898 Period Japanese canteen with aluminum cap and leather straps. Great markings on the throat. Strap has damage and is broken at one point.
-WWII Japanese aluminum canteen with original "Model A" Aluminum and cork stopper. This was the first type of stopper used with this model canteen, a carry over from the earlier smaller canteen, which was replaced by this model in 1930. Originally had a silk tag that is worn away, but there are Japanese characters scratched into the shell. The leather retaining strap is cracked and broken, but the cap is present. A great example.
This is a great field gear lot, ready for further research and display!
