Original Item. Only One Available. This is a great example of a Japanese Good Luck flag, with the names of dozens of Japanese friends and family of the departing soldier. There are also some well wishes, with the largest at the right of the flag reading Prayers for Eternal Good Fortune in War. Unfortunately one corner of the flag has a rectangular portion missing, likely deteriorated.
The flag measures roughly 26 x 36” and retains only one of its original corner reinforcements, the other being lost when the portion was cut away from one corner. The retained leather reinforcement is very weak but does retain the tie string. The flag is in heavily flown and worn condition with heavy creasing and some tearing in spots both in the flag and along the edges. This example was almost certainly a battlefield pickup. The writing is still legible with some areas of fading. There are some small holes in the sun, with some tearing in spots across the flag. This would look amazing framed.
Some of the other writing includes two large characters meaning Loyalty, and a great deal of signed names, some of which include Kinsho Ogura, Matsuzo Akiyama, Yatsuji Imahiro, Kinsho Fukushinso, Tomekichi Fujinami, Takejiro Tamai, and Kazuhiro Ito. Please note that these translations are not exact and were translated using a translation app.
The flag is made of what appears to be rayon cloth, an early form of synthetic cloth made from wood, with the red "sun" dyed piece sewn into the middle. The flag is in fair but rough condition and is the real deal. The writing is still mostly legible, and this would make a fine display piece for a wall or glass table. These are getting harder and harder to find in any condition.
