Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting Japanese Kimono bearing the flags of Japan, the United States, Great Britain, France, and a Naval-related flag, with an anchor in front of two zig-zag lines. The front edges are each printed with the characters 平和, or Peace. On the back is a large red circle with the characters 萬國, or All Nations.
The design combines international flags with explicitly peace-oriented wording, making it a particularly intriguing example of Japanese political and popular textile culture from the 1930s and early 1940s.
The Japanese Rising sun flag is shown twice, along with a Japanese Navy-related flag that looks close to the Manchukuo Marine Police, a good research project. There are no other markings on the Kimono. It has good wear and requires some more research.
The combination of the 平和 “Peace” inscriptions, 萬國 “All Nations” wording, Japanese Rising Sun flags, U.S., British, and French national flags, and clearly identifiable Manchukuo Marine Police flag makes this a particularly unusual surviving example of Japanese political and propaganda textile design. Its precise original message remains worthy of further research, but the Manchukuo emblem firmly places the imagery within the political world of Japanese expansion and international tension during the 1930s and WWII era.
