  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a hilariously designed Japanese comfort bag sporting anti-allied propaganda artwork. The cotton bag is approximately 8½ x 13”, and bears printed caricatures of Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Chiang Kai Shek, with kanji. The reverse side of the bag still retains the original paper manufacturer’s label.

The bag features Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Chiang Kai Shek floating in the ocean on a boat without a paddle, and FDR’s cane has been used to hoist an SOS flag.

This is a very unique piece of Japanese soldier ephemera that will look great in any WWII collection. A little comic relief went a long way for soldiers constantly facing horrible conditions. Ready for further research and display.

A comfort bag (慰問袋, imon-bukuro) was a gift packet prepared by civilians to be sent to Imperial Japanese Military soldiers for the purpose of encouraging them. An imonbukuro, or “comfort bag”, what we would now call a “care package”, was used to send small gifts to the troops. The bag contained comfort articles (慰問品, imon-hin) not issued by the Japanese Military, such as toiletries, dried fruits, canned foods, and letters of encouragement and victory mirrors like this one. The bags were prepared by schoolgirls or local patriotic women's societies. These activities were also made in Korea, which was then under Japanese rule, to encourage Korean soldiers in the Imperial Japanese Military.
