Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice inert demilitarized genuine Japanese Type 97 Hand Grenade. This example is offered in good condition with the cap and fuse housing intact, but the cover, pin and pull string are missing on this example. The fuse is still attached to the screw off top, which can be removed to inspect the interior, and it even still has the detonator tube! This example is completely inert and is in compliance with the current BATF standards on inert ordnance. Not Available For Export.
The grenade body still retains much of the original black paint, and there is a very small amount of the red paint on the top as well. The top cap still unscrews so that the interior can be inspected. The fuse on this example is actually marked at the very bottom with a Japanese date: 5 六 十 昭. This marking is written right to left, and would be read: SHOWA (current reigning emperor) Juu-Roku Nen (16th year of reign - 1941) 5th month (May). The detonator tube can be pulled off of the fuse, showing that it is marked in Japanese with the delay length: 四 - 五 秒, which is read "Yon - Go Byou", or 4-5 Seconds. The first character is partly covered by the top cover. This example is also stamped 181 in white on the top of the body, with a symbol next to that. As mentioned, the cover, pin, and pull string are absent on this example.
The Type 97 Hand Grenade was the standard fragmentation hand grenade of the Imperial Japanese Army and Imperial Japanese Navy SNLF during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II.
A great example of a sought after WWII Japanese grenade! Ready to display!
