Original Item. Only One Available. This is an original late-WWII Italian Fascist propaganda leaflet printed in the form of an American one-dollar Silver Certificate. Distributed during the Allied campaign in Italy, it was intended to undermine confidence in American promises and discourage cooperation with U.S. forces in occupied and recently liberated areas. The leaflet measures 2 ⅜ x 5 ⅞” and has some heavy tape repairs as shown.

The back of the leaflet has the text overlaid:

"Le promesse Americane sono sempre state vane Sono balle belle e buone sono bolle di sapone! (come questa banconota)"

Which translates to

"American promises have always been empty. They are pure nonsense, they are soap bubbles! (like this banknote)"

Leaflets of this kind were circulated in areas affected by the Allied advance and were intended for Italian civilians as well as soldiers. Their purpose was to present American assurances of liberation, prosperity, and political freedom as deceptive or worthless. Propaganda material could be scattered from aircraft, distributed by hand, posted publicly, or left in areas expected to be entered by opposing forces.

The recognizable American banknote format, sharply worded Italian slogan, and surviving wartime paper make this an interesting example of psychological warfare during the Italian Campaign. The heavy tape repairs are substantial condition factors, but the principal design and message remain legible.
