Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original Italian WWII-era national flag of the Kingdom of Italy, measuring approximately 14 ⅜ x 23 ½ inches. The flag is of single-piece printed construction and is made from a rough textile material similar to cotton. At the center of the white field is the Savoy Coat of Arms, which is printed directly onto the fabric rather than separately sewn or applied.

The flag appears to have seen extensive use and is in fair overall condition with a strong period appearance. The printed Savoy arms have faded somewhat with age and use, and the fabric shows visible folding creases. Despite the wear, the principal design remains clearly recognizable.

This example is fair with a great patina, with the printed on Coat of Arms appearing a bit faded. There are also folding creases.

The green, white, and red Italian tricolor had its origins in the revolutionary and Napoleonic period and became closely associated with the movement for Italian unification during the nineteenth century. Following the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, the tricolor bearing the arms of the House of Savoy became the national flag of the new kingdom. The Savoy shield remained a defining feature of the state flag through the monarchy and was removed following the end of the Kingdom of Italy and establishment of the Italian Republic in 1946.

During the WWII period, flags of this pattern represented the Kingdom of Italy under the House of Savoy and were used in both civil and military settings. The central Savoy arms distinguish these monarchy-era flags immediately from the plain green, white, and red tricolor adopted by the Italian Republic after the institutional referendum of 1946.
