Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is one of the most intriguing pieces of Italian headgear we have offered. This long college hiking cap bears great bullion insignia included a crossed key symbol reading “Nune et Semper” (Now and Always), a Rome badge reading SPQR or Senatus Populusque Romanus (Latin for "The Senate and the People of Rome"), and a black MVSN eagle.
The hat retains its braided black and gold rope chinstrap which has an adjustment knot that still moves with force. The back of the crown has two tassels forming a shape similar to braided cuff ranks with two small tassels, and the cap has a very long tail with its own tassel at the very back. The cap is 17 ½” long.
The interior retains a sweatband which bears a broken size sticker reading 4 ½ / 56. The sweatband itself is marked:
speciale per UGO PURI
ROMA
The interior crown retains a maker’s label reading:
UGO PURI
Via Nazionale 168
ROMA
This student was in an MVSN program and would have attended a Rome University. This cap requires a lot more research, but is a lovely wartime example that was certainly worn by a patriotic Roman.
