Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very good original Italian WWII M1938 folding knife bayonet for the Carcano Fucile Corto Mod. 38, complete with its steel scabbard. This example retains the original folding mechanism, push-button mounting system, wooden grips, blued single-edge blade, and serial number L 13484. Unlike many surviving M1938 bayonets that were subsequently converted to fixed-blade configuration, this example remains in its original folding form.
The Fucile Corto Mod. 38 was adopted by the Italian Army in 1938 as a shortened development of the long-serving Carcano rifle system. The original Mod. 38 short rifle was chambered for the 7.35mm cartridge and incorporated fixed sights, a shorter barrel, and a newly designed folding bayonet. Later rifles of the same general pattern were also produced in 6.5mm as Italian ordnance returned to the established service cartridge during WWII.
The M1938 bayonet was considerably shorter than the earlier Model 1891 sword bayonet and was designed so that the blade could fold back into the hilt in a manner similar to a large pocket knife. When mounted to the rifle, the folded blade could fit into a dedicated recess in the fore-end of the stock, allowing the bayonet to remain attached during normal use and be unfolded when required. The system proved less satisfactory in service than anticipated, and fixed-blade variants were subsequently produced.
This example retains the original folding configuration and has not been converted. The blade folds completely into the hilt as intended, and the release mechanism is controlled by the original push button. The bayonet mounting latch also remains present and functions properly. The wooden grip scales show minor service and handling wear but remain solid and intact, while the pommel, guard, and mechanical components retain a good amount of their original finish. The spine of the hilt is stamped L 13484, the serial number.
This example is particularly interesting because it preserves the original folding system in fully functional form, together with serial number L 13484 and a well-preserved steel scabbard. The minor grip wear, blade finish loss, runner wear, and scattered oxidation are the principal condition considerations, while the retained folding mechanism and original configuration make it a strong representative example of the M1938 Carcano bayonet.
