Original Item. Only One Available. The Vaudagna B4 is an Italian WWII era antipersonnel mine, based on the German S-Mine. Unlike the German counterpart, the B4 lacks the propellant charge underneath, so it was generally fixed to a tree or a post rather than being buried in the ground. This is the first example we have had the pleasure to offer. Like all deactivated ordnance, this example is Not Available for Export.
The mine measures 6¼ x 1½”. It retains all of its original parts and has been made inert. The cap on the bottom attached to a chain still unscrews. The side of the mine is stamped B4. This is a shrapnel mine and on discharge scatters scrap metal. It is usually fixed above the ground to a tree or post as it has no "jack-in-the-box" effect like the British and German types, but has been used buried. It is fired by pulling a trip wire or by cutting a tension wire.
The upper section houses four different reels of string to set as trip wires with a tensioned plunger/striker on the top to detonate the charge. During WWII these captured mines were issued to the secret units of the Home Guard Auxiliary. These units were specially-trained and highly-secret military personnel created by the British Government to carry out clandestine warfare in response to a possible invasion by NSDAP German forces. Thankfully these units were never called into active service but many of the bunkers and their contents have remained undiscovered.
This is a very rare example of a scarce B4 mine, the first we have ever offered! Ready for further research and display.
