Original Item: Only One Available. This is an attractive original Italian Fascist-era cast bronze desk or display statue depicting an eagle perched above a Roman-style fasces, one of the principal political symbols adopted by Benito Mussolini’s Fascist movement and government.
A fasces is a bound bundle of wooden rods, often, but not always, including an axe (occasionally two axes) with its blade emerging. The fasces is an Italian symbol that had its origin in the Etruscan civilization and was passed on to ancient Rome, where it symbolized a Roman king's power to punish his subjects, and later, a magistrate's power and jurisdiction.
This example is entirely correct for the Italian Fascists during the Pre-WWII to WWII period. The bronze measures 8 ½” tall with a base measuring 1 ⅞ x 2 ⅞”. There are some flaws in the construction with holes in both sides of the fasces, primarily near the center next to the axe.
The combination of the Roman-derived eagle and fasces imagery, compact freestanding sculptural form, aged cast-metal construction, and unmistakable Fascist-period iconography makes this an interesting piece of Italian political material culture.
