Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an extremely scarce Italian Model 00 (Model 1900) flare signal pistol with factory original checkered aluminum or zinc grips. It bears clear manufacture markings on the left side of the frame:
MIDA
CASTELLI
BRESCIA
This model of flare pistol was manufactured by Castelli during both World War I and World War II, and it can be difficult to discern them. The World War I manufactured variations had a smaller maker’s mark on the side near the cocking handle, like this example. This example was likely reworked and used during World War II as well, however. All pieces appear functional but the springs are sticky in some places.
The flare gun has some of the original finish, but overall looks to have been improperly stored for quite some time, so there is a lot of surface rust on the exterior. It may have been dropped on the battlefield and recovered some time after the war, resulting in the rust damage. 13½ x 14½ x 6”
There are two different serial numbers on this piece, meaning parts were likely interchanged. We can see 916 on the left side of the frame and 169 under the barrel, with 7402 on the right side of the frame and on the barrel itself. It has a strong Hammer spring, and as far as we can tell is mechanically fully functional. The firing pin is intact and functional, and the original lanyard ring is still intact.
A great example of a WWI Italian flare pistol used during World War I and World War II, ready for further research and display.
