Original Irish Percussion Cavalry Carbine by W. & J Rigby of Dublin with Captured Ramrod & Twist Forged Barrel - circa 1840

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting Irish Percussion cavalry carbine, marked on the lock plate by maker W. & J. RIGBY, with a faint DUBLIN stamping on the barrel. There are no military markings, so it is most likely a commercial or colonial service produced weapon. It features a 22 inch long twist forged barrel, which was made with a .65" rifled bore, since smooth bored possibly for Colonial use. All brass classic mounts, the design is very similar East India Company IRREGULAR CAVALRY CARBINES of the 1840's. It has a bar extension under the barrel for the "captured" ramrod, as it looks to have been designed to possibly take a bayonet of some type. Definitely an interesting piece worth of further research!

The Butt plate tang is correctly bearing the Irish Government marking of LE 1140, required by the Irish registration Act of 1843. Weapons all had to be taken to the local constabulary and registered, and were marked with two letters for the district / county, followed by a number. "LE" is the code for Leitrim county in north west Ireland. This was realized to be mostly a waste of time and lasted only until August 1846, which really helps set the timeframe for this carbine.

The gun was never fitted with saddle bar and ring, and has the correct "teardrop" shaped escutcheons used to fill the holes designed to fit a saddle bar. The stock is in good original condition, with some nice "flame" to the grain on the forestock area. It does show some wear from use, and there is a repaired area along the woodline on the right side of the fore stock. There is also a crack on the left side near the lock screws. Some wood is missing around the cap bolster due to powder burn erosion. We checked the lock, and it functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full, though it is a bit stiff. We checked the bore, and it is clear, but shows significant oxidation and fouling.

A really good example showing use but still an exceptionally rare IRISH CARBINE. Ready to display!
