Original Indian Wars Era U.S. Marine Corps M185O NCO Staff Sword by Horstmann with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine Marine Corps M1850 NCO Staff Sword, with a nickel plated blade of very quality and condition. It is etched with UNITED STATES MARINES as well as the EGA, with only some slight pitting near the tip. This is a post Civil War sword, which we believe dates to the 1870s. The blade appears to have the correct marks for the Civil War, but the scabbard is from a later period. We made this determination because the scabbard is leather covered steel.

The guard and the scabbard have mismatched rack numbers: No 32 on the locket, and 28 on the handguard. The guard and pommel cap are tight. The grip and wire are original, however the leather is quite worn, and missing in areas. There is also some lifted off. The original blade washer has kept the 28" blade tight. The blade is in great condition with and ricasso marked with the Horstmann trademark, with the name in a circle surrounding it:

W.H. HORSTMANN COMPANY
PHILADELPHIA

The scabbard is the standard NCO design with the frog carry stud, with a leather covered steel body. Historically, these scabbards did not hold up well and the leather often is falling off or missing. This example however has the leather almost entirely intact! It does look like the stitching on the seam gave way, and was covered with some tape, long ago.

Overall an rare sword with a very nice blade that appears to date from the Civil War but due to the construction of the scabbard we believe dates to the 1870s. Ready to display!
