Original Indian Early 19th Century Tulwar Battle Sword - Cleaned - Sepoy Rebellion of 1857-59

Original Item: Very Few Available. IMA has just found a handful of these original Indian Tulwar fighting swords in a recent warehouse inventory. These were released by the Indian State of Jaipur in the 1970s, and date from the early 1800s, almost certainly having taken part in the Sepoy Rebellion, better known as the INDIAN MUTUNY in 1857- 1859.
At that time in the 1970s, India believing that antique treasures were all being looted by the west, and introduced very stringent exporting regulations, now somewhat relaxed. As a result much material was disguised as modern reproductions and having passed Indian custom inspection was shipped overseas.
These Original Tulwar battle swords fell into this category and as a result some enterprising Indian exporter had all the swords enthusiastically cleaned and each fitted with a new black canvas covered wood scabbard declaring them all as modern replicas. Years later IMA purchased the remaining stock and, and previously had offered these with the scabbards.
Over time however, some lost their scabbards, and these were set aside, now found in our recent warehouse cleanout. We offer these few examples, and they will definitely not last long!
Note: Each of these Tulwar swords was made by hand, so no two are identical. The curve of the blade, the style of the grip, presence of a knuckle guard, width of the blade, blade length, etc are all variable. These are between 125-200 years old and look it despite overly enthusiastic cleaning. Comes with canvas & wood scabbard.
The tulwar (pronounced [t̪əlʋaːr]), also spelled talwaar and talwar, is a type of curved sword or sabre from the Indian Subcontinent, and is found in the modern countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. It is the "traditional" fighting sword of ancient India, with examples going back 400/500 years. The word tulwar itself originates from the Sanskrit word taravāri (Sanskrit: तरवारि ) which means "one-edged sword". The style originated alongside other curved swords such as the Persian shamshir, the Turkish kilij and the Afghan pulwar, all such swords being originally derived from earlier curved swords developed in Turkic Central Asia.
