Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The tulwar, also spelled talwaar and talwar, is a type of curved sword or saber from the Indian Subcontinent, and is found in the modern countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. It is the "traditional" fighting sword of ancient India, with examples going back 400/500 years. The word tulwar itself originates from the Sanskrit word taravāri which means "one-edged sword". The style originated alongside other curved swords such as the Persian shamshir, the Turkish kilij and the Afghan pulwar, all such swords being originally derived from earlier curved swords developed in Turkic Central Asia.
This fine example measures 13 1/2" in overall length and is fitted with a very curved blade of 9" which is really substantially made. It is quite thick, and has two long deep fullers down the middle of each side. The edge is no longer sharp but as with handling most weapons, do so cautiously. It looks like the blade was at one time a full length sword and was cut down dagger size.
The characteristic hilt has the traditional "disc" on the pommel, with a skull crusher point
on the end.. This Tulwar dates from around 1800 and no doubt took part in the Sepoy Rebellion better known as the INDIAN MUTINY in 1857- 1859 and has been lightly cleaned and is ready for display.
An unusual and interesting TULWAR battle sword/dagger.
