This is a very good original Imperial Japanese WWII enlisted-pattern Navy canteen of the type issued to Imperial Japanese Navy personnel and used extensively by the Special Naval Landing Forces, or SNLF. It retains its canvas-covered metal canteen body, screw-off aluminum cap, adjustable canvas shoulder strap, and original chain cap retainer. Of particular interest are faint Japanese characters on the side of the cover and additional characters painted in white on the carrying strap, both of which offer good potential for further research.

The canteen body is protected by its original canvas or heavy cotton cover, which shows honest age and service wear. There is some minor tearing to the material in several areas, but the cover remains substantially complete and continues to fit the canteen correctly. Faint kanji can be seen on one side of the cover, although the characters are presently too indistinct to transcribe with confidence. More prominent Japanese characters are painted in white on the carrying strap. These may represent a name, unit, inventory number, or other ownership marking.

The original adjustable canvas shoulder strap remains complete and attached. The aluminum screw cap is also present and is retained by its small metal chain, which connects to a triangular slider on the strap. The original rubber gasket associated with the cap has deteriorated considerably and is now weak and crumbling. This gasket originally provided the seal between the cap and canteen neck rather than serving as the principal means of retaining the cap, so care should be taken when handling or removing the cap. There is some heavy paint loss to the cup.

The canteen remains in good overall condition, particularly considering the vulnerability of the textile and rubber components. The metal fittings show expected age, while the canvas cover and strap display moderate wear consistent with period use. The minor tears, fading, and deteriorated gasket are the primary condition issues, but none significantly affects the outward appearance of the piece.

The Imperial Japanese Navy maintained its own field equipment distinct from that of the Imperial Japanese Army, and Navy canteens of this general configuration were standard equipment for personnel serving ashore. SNLF troops used the same broader family of IJN field equipment, including Navy-pattern canteens with canvas covers, adjustable shoulder straps, aluminum caps, and chain retainers. For enlisted personnel, the canteen was commonly carried at the hip with the shoulder strap arranged beneath or around other field equipment.

The Special Naval Landing Forces developed from the Imperial Japanese Navy’s long-standing practice of forming armed landing parties from ship and naval-base personnel. By the early 1930s, more permanent SNLF organizations had emerged, particularly from the major naval districts of Yokosuka, Kure, Sasebo, and Maizuru. These units fought extensively in China and later took part in amphibious and ground operations throughout the Pacific and Southeast Asia during WWII. Despite often being compared with Western marine forces, the SNLF remained part of the Imperial Japanese Navy rather than a separate independent marine corps.

This example is particularly interesting for the combination of its complete Navy-pattern carrying system, chain-retained aluminum cap, surviving canvas cover, and untranslated Japanese markings on both the cover and strap. The deteriorated rubber gasket and minor textile tears should be handled carefully, while the painted and written characters provide the most promising avenue for establishing additional information about its original wartime use.
