Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding piece worthy of professional framing with museum glass. This 30 ¾ x 42 ¾” Japanese-made map of the Philippine Islands was in the possession of a Japanese pilot conducting missions over the island of Palawan, with flight plans showing routing and mileage to specific target sites. This pilot was shot down over the island, crash-landing at Teniguiban, Bacuit Bay. There, an American officer came upon him, and took this map off of his person.
The map is inscribed in the bottom right corner:
Captured Oct. 31, 1944
From a Jap aviator, crushed at Teniguiban, Bacuit
by Lt. S. V. Macalor(?)
Ex. O. “C”. Co.
Teneguiban is a barangay located in the municipality of El Nido, Palawan, in the Philippines. We could not identify the officer who captured this map, as his name is too loosely written to discern, but it could be identified with enough trial and error on fold3 and newspapers!
The map has very heavy wear, fold marks, staining, and tearing as shown, and as is to be expected from a map that’s been through what this one has. The annotations on the islands and the added town names are just amazing details. This piece is truly one-of-a-kind and will serve as a great backdrop to any WWII collection.
