This is a very interesting Imperial Japanese WWII-era private-purchase Army Air Service winter flight helmet constructed from dark brown leather with fur-lined ear and neck protection. The helmet retains a large hand-cut five-pointed Japanese Army star at the front, adjustable side flaps, multiple closure fittings, and openings positioned for the use of communications equipment.

The helmet has a close-fitting multi-panel leather skull typical of period aviation headgear. The dark leather remains supple and displays an attractive worn surface with creasing, scratches, and expected age from service and storage.

A large leather five-pointed Japanese Army star is stitched to a circular leather backing at the center front. The insignia is somewhat irregular and appears hand cut, which is consistent with private-purchase or locally manufactured equipment. It shows wear and surface loss but remains firmly attached.

Unlike summer flight helmets with exposed rigid receiver cups, this winter example incorporates fur-lined side flaps intended to provide warmth while still allowing access to the ears. Each side has a circular opening surrounded by fur, with a leather flap that can be positioned open or closed. These openings would have allowed the wearer to hear more clearly or accommodate communications equipment while retaining protection from cold air.

The photographs clearly show the circular ear openings beneath the fur. The flaps are secured by a combination of buttons and snaps and could be folded back when the ear openings were needed.

The long side and neck flaps are heavily lined with brown fur and provide substantial coverage around the ears, cheeks, jaw, and rear of the neck. The crown itself is lined with dark fabric rather than fur, helping reduce excessive bulk while retaining warmth around the most exposed areas.

The helmet retains several original buttons, snaps, and adjustment straps. One button is missing from the right side where it would have secured the fur-lined ear flap in the raised position, although the lower button remains present.

The chin or neck closure retains a snap on one side. The opposing leather strap no longer has a corresponding snap or buttonhole and appears to have been shortened, possibly following damage or deterioration.

Condition is very good overall, with expected leather creasing, surface wear, scratches, staining, and scattered loss to the fur. The front star remains securely attached, the fur lining is substantially intact, and the majority of the straps, buttons, and snaps are still present.

This is an unusual and visually impressive example of Imperial Japanese winter aviation headgear. The hand-applied Army star, fur-lined communications flaps, close-fitting leather construction, CROWN-marked snaps, and private-purchase character make it an excellent addition to an Imperial Japanese Army Air Service or Pacific aviation collection.
